buy local

i just wanted to post some pictures of our BEAUTIFUL EGGS from the local farmer's market!

i have never seen such beautiful eggs! they are brown and white and green and perfect. and the shells are so sturdy. they are all different sizes and . . . i love them.

plus the woman i bought them from says they reuse cartons, so we can bring in our cartons from the store and she will recycle them by putting her eggs in them to sell at the market! how great is that?

sparkles and shines

oh! so, here's an update on the scouring scrub i made:

it works great!

we have a gas stove . . . so that means that when we cook, things fall down on the stove and sizzle and get all crusty and brown. and since 4 of us live here, mob mentality sets in and no one actually cleans the stove off . . . so the crust is left to sit and take root.

so, today i was doing dishes and cleaning the kitchen and busted out with my delicious, lemony baking soda mixture. i dusted some on the stove, got it a little bit wet. let it sit. and then took a sponge and scrubbed it around on the gunk.

viola! it sparkles and sines! the brown crust is gone!

i heart that mucho.

spring is coming . . .

so, even though it snowed a bit last night, i know that spring is on the way. i need less and less layers when i walk to work every day. i've moved from mittens to fingerless gloves when i drive. i've even contemplated wearing my sunglasses from time to time when i leave the house.

the promise of spring is peeking through the gloomy clouds and biting cold of winter!

i am quite ready for spring - my favorite time of year even though i have horrible hayfever during the entire month of may.

some lovely things i'm doing to get ready for spring:

we've started composting. those friends we met from oregon, that i mentioned a few posts down explained to me how they are composting without a yard . . . so i am giving it a go.

i've also emailed the community garden organizer and put my name in to get a plot this year if there is one available. the plan is to share the plot with all the people in our apartment. between the 8 of us, we can share the duties of watering and weeding and harvesting throughout the summer - especially with all the summertime trips we all have planned. there is bound to be at least one person in the house that can stop by the plot and check it out. and this way, if we plant too much eggplant for one family, we'll be able to split it up between everyone.

and i will have somewhere to take my compost when it becomes nutrient rich earth.

i've also been committing to doing yoga more often to get a little more in shape for the spring and summer - shorts, tank tops and swimwear season . . . maybe i should get a little sun too? in the spring and summer, we plan to take our bikes out to the bike path that runs along the bay - it's at least 15 miles long and goes all the way out to the state park in bristol. a lovely summertime ride. i have romantic notions of wearing a skirt and keds and riding my schwinn along the ocean . . .

other things i am looking forward to:
grilling outside
sitting in our little haven next to the house while eating the above mentioned grilled food
rollerskating
going to the beach
hiking
possibly bouldering and rock climbing (with my new shoes from the REI garage sale!)
road trips (niagra falls? dc? who knows!)
my sister's wedding
drinking iced coffee in the patio seating at olga's cup and saucer
camping up north
open toed shoes

not looking forward to:
puffy red eyes and other allergy related discomforts
being super sweaty in the hot humid summer
missing the GORGEOUS pacific northwest in the summertime!! ack! my heart!
being afraid for my life while riding my bike because of the way people drive
ticks
dirty feet from wearing flip flops

jon has been sick for the last two days . . . sad. he's on the mend though! and hudson has been taking good care of him (so have i, but i don't have a photo of it). here is a photo of hudson laying down by the bed guarding his sick master. and helping him with his homework (notice the library book under his paws):

lastly,
i would like to report on the eco-friendly scouring bath and tile cleaner that i made today.

i usually use mrs meyer's clean day scouring scrub. it smells so good and works really well. it's also safe and healthy to use. i ran out last week while scrubbing the tub and put it on my shopping list. sadly (or luckily?) they didn't have it at the grocery store when i went looking . . . so i thought, "why not just make it yourself?"

it is SO MUCH CHEAPER and SO EASY to make it! and this way i KNOW for SURE that the ingredients i used are safe for my housemates, my doggie and me to use.

here's what i did:

1 cup baking soda
1/4 cup distilled white vinegar
10-12 drops of lemon essential oil (you can use whatever scent you want. i am a fan of citrus for cleaning).
mix it all together. store in a wide mouth mason jar. double, triple, quadruple the recipe as needed.

it smelled so good - like lemon frosting! i could eat it if i wanted too . . .

i haven't used it yet, but i will let you know how it works as soon as i do!

tanya asked for more pictures of hudson . . . well, here is one of a HUGE part of him! his hair.

he shed his summer coat to grow his winter one in november . . . a little late, i'd say. he's so special.

anyway, i have pictures to post, but they are STILL on my camera and not on the computer . . . putting that on my list for this week.

now it's off to bed!

p.s. i was super not productive today. besides the hour of yoga and the 4 hours of working that i did. i watched 3 1/2 episodes of gilmore girls and the entire Loooooooong movie "the secret life of bees." sweet. we'll see how tomorrow goes. LOST will be on!!!

long overdue update

sorry it's been so long since a substantial post (besides the rich jandt story) . . . we really do have stories to tell and pictures to post! i just haven't even gotten around to putting photos on the computer since we got home from oregon in january!

so, i figured while i make granola, i could post a blog (in between stirring every ten minutes so the oats wont burn).

things here are good. i've been working a lot and jon has been reading a book a day for school. in between this, we are finding other things to keep us busy.

i am helping to plan and put on a benefit concert here in providence called Musica Fem. it will go along with the VDAY campaign and the until the violence stops festival. VDAY is a campaign to raise awareness to global justice movements that are aimed at putting a stop to violence against women and girls around the world. for our concert, we will have 4 different women performing artists play at the west side arts space (WSA is a local non profit that i have been volunteering with this past year). this concert is in conjunction with WSA's Imago Fem art show (an art show featuring pieces from local women artists that will run through march 15) that is raising money for a local women's shelter. i will hopefully have a few pieces in the show as well. the show opens on the 21st and concert will be on the 28th. whew.

in other news, a few weeks ago my cousin emily and her husband brian came down and we all went ice skating together downtown (as well as introducing brian to his new fav bubble tea house). we had a great time! it was my first time ice skating ever! and i didn't fall one time! emily and brian took a lot of pictures . . . whenever we get them from them we might post a few :)

HERE IS SOME REALLY GOOD NEWS: I FINALLY TURNED IN ALL THE PAPERWORK TO FINISH MY APPLICATION TO BE LICENSED AS A MASSAGE THERAPIST HERE IN RHODE ISLAND!!! when i took it to the post office to mail it all in, i was so nervous and excited and shaking and sweating . . . i'm sure the postman thought i was mailing a letter bomb. so, hopefully i will hear back on that within a month . . . and then i will have another option for making money so we can save for . . .

. . . our trip home to oregon in june for sara and peter's wedding, as well as a hopeful spring break road trip next month to visit friends and family along the east coast, and most importantly the HUGE insurance bill that is due at the beginning of april . . . ah yes, the economy may be in the toilet, but we still have to pay the same amount for crappy health coverage.

other mile markers: my best friend's baby turned one year old last week . . . sadly i wasn't able to be there to celebrate with them. it breaks my heart to be so far away from them. i love them so much! i was so blessed to be able to fly back and be with them for a whole week to help out when he was just born. he was so tiny then - now he's huge!

i'll finish with a fun story:

the other night, jon asked me if i wanted to go on a date. of course, i said "yes!" since i covet any time i can get with him (phd's are not designed for married people). we decided to check out this thai food place down the street that people have raved about but that we had never tried before. we dressed up and went down there. as we walked up, we noticed some people waiting outside. it was a monday night so we were sort of surprised that there was a wait (the place only has abt 6 tables we discovered, once we were seated). so jon went in to put in our names and i asked the couple how long they thought the wait was. they told us it wasn't long and instead of lapsing back into uncomfortable new england silence, they kept chatting with us. we asked each other if either had been to the restaurant yet. neither group had.

they said, "we just moved here and we are trying out places to try to figure out what is good and what isn't."

"oh, where did you move here from?" i asked.

"oregon," they answered.

"no way! that's where we are from!" we replied!

turned out they were from eugene and had transferred here because his professor at U of O had gotten a job at Brown and had asked him to come with him. he is getting his phd in psychology at brown and she is working as an architect in a firm nearby. soon after our discovery of being from the same place, their names were called and they were seated.

we continued to wait outside.

"we should give them our phone numbers."

"yeah, we could all use a little oregonian time every now and then."

a few seconds later, we were called in for our table. which turned out to be right next to our new friends' table! we talked off and on to each other through the meal and then exchanged contact info before leaving (right when the OTHER person i know from oregon - a girl i went to summer camp with who moved out here 13 years ago - came in to the place for dinner too!). since then, we've hung out a few times and really enjoyed it - it's fun to bounce frustrations and revelations off of each other.

how exciting!

so, this post really should have been like 4 or 5 different posts . . . if you are still reading: thanks for sticking with it! we miss you!

lots of love,
tabitha, jon and hudson

a rich jandt story

so, rich jandt is an old friend of mine. he recently started reading arwen's blog and i noticed. don't be surprised that i know rich . . . i know kevin bacon. i know every one.

any way i started telling stories about rich . . . and decided to blog this one:

one time back in my college days, rich let my friend jamie and i borrow his tent so we could camp on the soccer field.

then he decided to play a trick on us by throwing a stink bomb at the tent (HIS tent, i might remind you) while we were asleep. the noise woke me up and i groggily said, "jamie, i think the tent is on fire."

she groggily replied, "what do you think we should do?"

"i guess we should get out."

so we grudgingly got out of the tent.

the stink bomb, after smoking us out, proceeded catch the tent on FIRE and burn a hole in the tent. rich's tent. that he threw the stink bomb at.

then the security guards came and told us we weren't allowed to camp on the soccer field and that we had to go back to our dorms.

so we made a fort in j's living room and spent the rest of the night there.

and rich got his tent back. with a hole in it.

good story, no?

addendum: tim lewis was so totally involved in this story as well.
