my weirdness

thanks to james for the idea . . . i guess i self-tagged myself . . . (i realize that last phrase might not make sense entirely)

here are 6 weird things about me (other than my atrocious grammar skills):

1) my left leg is longer than my right . . . this is about 35% of the cause of my klutzieness (is that a word?)

2) i like to make up words. "crookie" is one of my favorites. it means something is crooked. used in a sentance: that old house is looking a little crookie. another good one is "bendie" . . . i may not have actually made that one up.

3) i have 6 sisters. could i be any weirder? they are all from the same mother and father, none are twins and we are not mormon or catholic

4) i reallyreallyreallyreally hate mapel syrup. end of story.

5) i avoid asking for help at the store at almost all costs. if i can't find something i am looking for, i would rather leave than ask for help. and if a store employee approaches me and asks if i "need any help finding anything" or if i am "finding everything ok" i freak out inside, calmly tell them yes, and try to leave the store within the next 10 seconds.

6) along the same lines, whenever i walk into a store, browse around and then leave without buying anything i always feel like i look suspicious like i have shoplifted or something. and then i feel guilty even though i didn't do anything wrong. i would rather buy something - anything - than feel guilt for shoplifting that i didn't commit. or i might as well just shoplift.
nah.

there you have it.

tag yourself if you want.

yeah so . . .

stupid stupid texan who can't handle money for the people who "elected" him to = cut funding for education = cut backs on how many slots are available for certain programs = only 5 were picked for the slot the husband applied for = the professor emailing him before the acceptance and rejection letters have been sent out stating that regretfully due to these cutbacks, we may have to talk about applying again next year = bummer.

pluuuuuusss . . . did cate blanchet not look FABULOUS tonight at the oscars!??!?! stunning.

aaaaaaaaaaaaand . . . my ribs hurt real bad. pilates hurts your ribs. there is this muscle called the rectus abdominis. it attaches from your pub*##(ic bone and also to your lower ribs. when you do pilates, it pulls on both these bones hardcore. therefore my pelvis and ribcage are quite sore. just thought i'd share.

i'd like to thank the academy. goodnight.

friday afternoon

i'm just sitting here, "working from home" (fridays and sundays are the days i usually don't work at all, the other days i work pretty hard) while the husband practices bass for when he plays next week for our friend's show.

it's a nice feeling. wearing my slippers. listening to some good tunes. doing the crossword in the willamette week.

i went to my first of four one-on-one pilates sessions this morning. it kicked my - tush - for sure. i will be sore tomorrow! but i am glad i am doing it . . . i think it will help my self-image to know that i am doing something good for my body.

and the studio is close enough to my house that i could walk. if i had the money, i would do it all the time . . . maybe i could just look into group mat classes.

parts of me simply just oscilate between wanting to be militantly aggressive about getting into shape so i can feel good about myself or the other option of giving up hopelessly, staying in bed, eating chocolate and watching tv.

i know. that doesn't sound like me. but it constantly plays at the back of my mind.

and what do i do? i usually compromise by landing in the middle. barely any exercise, hardly any tv, no laying in bed all day, and filling my schedule chock-full so that i don't get lost in the down time and quiet moments and really start evaluating my life.

i am happy when i am distracted and busy.

why all the self-disclosure? i don't really know. maybe it is because it is lent. or because i'm having some self-reflection time. maybe i am going borderline crazy. maybe i think that not many people read my blog anymore so i am safe being a bit more personal and not caring who finds out.

and i guess i haven't really disclosed much . . . i am just feeling vulnerable today.

peace . . .

i think i have decided what to give up for lent

cussing.

yes. i will quit saying the words that society has deemed as inappropriate . . . even though they are just words and very well may communicate exactly what i was hoping to say.

i will give it up for lent.

what are you giving up for lent?

2 1/2 years later

i figured since i worked all day yesterday and will work all day tomorrow that i would do something for myself today . . . so, i am finally scanning all our wedding pictures into digital form.

when we got married, we didn't put them on disc.

so, if you are patent, maybe i will post some of them online when i am done. i am only on #60 and there are hundreds.

but at least i know that they will be safe from someone spilling wine on the album on our coffee table.

for now, click on this to see one that i managed to post a while ago.

hmmm

so, i guess that blog down there was too long for people to really read and enjoy.

so, here's a nice short one.

valentine's day sucks. even if you have a significant other. there is just too much build-up. you will always be let down.

not that the man is a let-down. not at all. he bought me flowers (after being prompted by the best friend . . . but still).

and we had dinner at a friends house and had a general good amount of fun. but it wasn't more fun or more special than any other day.

it was nice.

but valentine's day is silly. it's like my friend jan says "i love john cusack, but he ruins everyone's lives by giving them a false sense of what romance should be" . . . valentine's day is john cusack on crack.

the roseland; a tale of technological and other difficulties

friday night a few friends and i went to see joshua radin in concert at the roseland theatre.

joshua radin is sort of becoming famous for being a) liked by zach braff b) on the last kiss soundtrack and c) being a beautiful looking person.

the opening band included all the same band members as joshua radin's band - minus josh and plus (my girl-crush) schuyler fisk. she broke my heart in several ways at several moments. gorgeous voice. gorgeous spirit.

plus they had an upright bass and a cello. i am a sucker for the strings.

so, anyway, the night started out well. i went with two girlfriends to salvador mollies for some good pirate food and rum. the dissapointing thing about this is that salvador mollies has been making some changes. good changes = awesome happy hour prices. bad changes = taking all the fun tiki/flip flop/pirate decor down out of the bar . . . now it just looks like another hipster/ikea hangout in pdx devoid of personality. but my painkiller (vodka, rum, coconut juice and other things) tasted the same so i was happy.

after dinner we headed to the show. it started almost a half hour late and then i was standing behind the three characters who shall be named 1) step touch girl (stg) 2)be tall or be still girl (btobsg) and 3) i'm drunk and i am cute so talk to me boy (idaicsttmb or dcttmb). we didn't notice them until the show started . . . as soon as the show started and i turned around to face the stage all i could see was a head. a very tall and very drunk girl (btobs) was standing in front of me . . . i managed to maneuver away a bit so that i could see around her just as i overheard her say something rude about refusing to move when people can't see around her. i whispered something to my friend char about her and she said "i always tell those girls that they can either be tall or be still. they have to chose. and then the viewing experience can be enjoyed." i had a feeling that this conversation wouldn't go well if i should choose to have it.

then the music started and her friend (step touch girl) stg began to do what she would continue to do during schuyler (pronounced skylar) fisk's entire set. step touch. step touch. turn drunkenly to flirt loudly with dcttmb, flip her hair, sip the latest coctail and then begin to step touch step touch again. the only problem with this was that not only was she "step touch girl" she was also "not aware of your personal space girl" so she was standing so close to me that every time she would step touch she would hit me in the leg, hip, arm or purse with her butt. and every fourth step touch she would elbow me in the boob.

i judged from the things they were saying (loudly) to each other that if i were to say something or to passive aggressively push back a bit on a random step touch that it would just result in a rude altercation that would leave me feeling a bit cut down. so i chose to passive aggressively stand my ground and not move. she could step touch all she wanted, but she was going to have to just keep running into me, i was not going to give way. every now and then i would scoot up a bit to try to crowd her out without giving away that this was what i was doing.

step touch.
step touch. bump my arm.
step touch.
elbow my boob.
step touch.
turn drunkenly to dcttmb and say loudly "i have this album!" and sing a few lines badly. comment on how drunk you are. flip hair while turning back into the step touch and sip the latest drink bought for her by dcttmb.
step touch.
bump my purse.
flip hair.
step touch.

i roll my eyes.

between schuyler and joshua's sets, we were able to reposition so that we were in front of our drunken friends. this way we could only hear them speaking loudly about how drunk they were, how they were so hot and how they were totally promiscuous that one time "remember that one time?! omg!!! i am so totally putting that on my BLOG!!" giggle.

joshua radin was sort of either in a bad mood or a subtle jerk or maybe i just read him wrong. but i could see where he was coming from. the crowd (especially by the bar) was being very noisy. and his music is very soft and mellow. and this seems to always be the problem whenever i go to a show at the roseland. people pay 15 bucks to see a show so that they can talk through it. annoying.

at one point joshua said "you sure are a noisy crowd . . . i can wait." and he proceded to wait for a bit more silence from the crowd before continuing with his story about this one time he saw been harper play "waiting on an angel" live . . . and then he played the song and in the middle of the song, the technical difficulties reared their ugly head. and he stopped the song and said "really? these people payed to see this show so can we get this right?!" this happened a few more times during the set and he was obviously upset at the venue for having such a crappy sound system. there was popping and cracking and the sound cut out completely sometimes and they had nothing in the monitors and couldn't hear each other. eventually the band totally left the stage and he played the rest alone with schuyler coming out every now and then to sing with him.

favorite moments:
1) waiting on an angel
2) telling schyler after the show that i had a girl-crush on her
3) being told by my friend matt that the way schuyler sang reminded him of me
4) he and schuyler singing "momma you've been on my mind" by bob dylan
5) joshua singing "girlfriend in acoma" after a request from someone in the front row
6) when a guy near me turned to the drunk friends and said "can you be quiet!?"

un-favorite moments:
1) when the drunk friends replied to the guy "oh sorry . . . (pause) . . . but it's not going to happen!"
2) the drunk friends in general
3) josh's attitude at times

after the show we went to the shanghai tunnel (a bar playing off these underground tunnels in portland from some sort of underground human trafficing that used to happen when the mob ran portland . . .) to debrief. we decided that as a whole schuyler was perfect and that josh was like an amateur ben harper wannabe with peter galagher eyebrows and a nice voice.

overall the music was good and the experience very memorable.

i still haven't decided what to get for my tattoo.

but i have signed up for four sessions with a personal pilates trainer. i am bartering my massage skills with my friend who is training to be a pilates instructor. one on one time with her and my abs . . . this is gonna kick butt.

peace

m e h

sometimes i forget to eat.

ok, when i am alone i ALWAYS forget to eat.

eating is such a social thing for me. when i am with people, we say "hey, let's go grab some coffee, or food or something." when i am at work i say "yes! it is my lunch break! i can get out of here for an hour and eat some food!"

when i work for myself and am at home alone or in my studio working hard all day . . . i forget to eat.

like today. it is almost 2 and all i have eaten was a bowl of some organic version of peanut butter captain crunch at 8 am today . . . i'm hungry.

it's like when jon and i were in europe and we'd be wandering around various art museums and stuff and then we'd look at each other and say "how are you doing? are you hungry?" and i'd say "oh, i feel peckish, but i'm ok for a bit longer" and we'd end up waiting until it was waaaay too late and then we'd be stranded in europe wandering with this lustfull hunger in our eyes trying to find some place with vegetarian food.
but we are so hungry that we can't really concentrate and we are cranky and we get upset with each other and then the meal isn't even fun by the time we find something.
it's mostly just for survival.

that's why i like food when it is social. it's much more fun.

and not so cranky.

so, i am going to go eat something alone in my kitchen now.

peace.

d e a r F e b r u a r y 2 n d ,

i regret to inform you and that you and i can no longer be friends. we've had our good times and our bad . . . but the bad have now outnumbered the good and it is time for us to part ways.

there was that one time that we spent together while i was debating whethere or not to break up with a certain cheating boy. you were there for me. reminding me that valentine's was on the way and that the best thing to do would be to break his heart before the big love fest on the 14th.

there was that other time when we were together and i was feeling really tired. i was overdoing it in school and extracurricular activities. sometimes i would even just fall asleep without realizing it. and you were there, warning me that mono was on the way. i of course wouldn't listen and ended up spending valentine's day sick in bed, throwing up, having The Mono.

you've always been a pleasant sort of day with bits of darkness around the edges, but this time you've gone too far. seriously, February 2nd, where do you get off doing what you did? you broke my friend's heart. and for that, i will no longer be talking to you.

we are through. do you hear me?

by the way, i hope your valentine's day sucks this year, feb 2nd. just like mine did when i had mono.

Feb 2nd, i hope you get The Mono.

yours truly,
the Dread Pirate TJ
