phew.
christmas is over and it is almost time for new years!
new year
new years.
which one is it?
anyway, we had a good christmas. jon got me my boots!! i got jon the martin scorcese documentary about bob dylan. we had a lot of fun with our families and friends. we celebrated "boxing day" with some friends at my sister's place. that was great!
we also declared tuesday "bathrobe day" and stayed in our bathrobes as long as possible for the entire day. it was great.
tomorrow is friday and i am off to a wedding. and then another on saturday.
and it is a 3 day weekend. yes!
how was your christmas?

finals are over . . .
and i think i pulled another 4.0 (not that they do grade point averages in trade school).
i'm off to lunch with my co-workers and then i'm taking off for christmas! i'll be back on wednesday . . .
don't miss me too much.
happy and safe celebrations to you all!
p.s. what's your favorite holiday song/carol? my husband's is "o holy night" . . . i haven't decided mine yet. does "ave maria" count as a holiday song? if so, that'll be my answer. i love jewels' version of it!
ok, i'm outta here!

happy winter solstice!
at exactly 10:35am PST, the winter solstice will occur. i am basically in love with the moon (and the sun too, i suppose), so i am very excited about this day!
this page has some great information about how different people celebrate this special day.
taken from
this page of factmonster, here is a description of the solstice:
"The winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The sun appears at its lowest point in the sky, and its noontime elevation appears to be the same for several days before and after the solstice. Hence the origin of the word solstice, which comes from Latin solstitium, from sol, "sun" and -stitium, "a stoppage." Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter."
here is a page that has links to several other sites about the solstice (if you are interested) . . .
there is even a
film called winter solstice.

it snowed in portland yesterday!
and i still made it to work . . . blech.
i have finals every day this week . . . and work . . . and christmas . . . and it snowed . . . and my mother-in-law was at my house last night and my mother will be here tonight . . . i just want a break!
in other news:
i went to see king kong saturday with my husband and some friends of ours . . . meh. take it or leave it. i choose to leave it. it was such a boy movie. like jurassic park, only you acutally like kong. the bug scene, i could have done without. the movie in general was waaaay too long. plus, i could have been studying for finals.
friday night, we went to a friends place for a "winter barbeque." they had some fire pits and a grill and all the kinds of liquor you could think of (the only way to stay warm because the bbq was outside), beer, beans, cider (with rum), ribs (blech), and (thanks to my husband for grilling me one) tofudogs. they had driven up to mount hood and brought back a truckload of snow . . . it was clever and fun, but very cold.
saturday night, my sister took my family (all 11 of us) to see the
oregon ballet theatre's production of
the nutcracker. my little sisters were so cute, leaning forward to see the ballerinas the best they could. i'm sure they are pirrohetting (how the heck do you spell that?) around their living room right now . . .
last night (after it snowed and i made a snow man . . .) we had to drive to the airport to pick up my brother-in-law (why didn't we tell him to take the max??) it took us two hours round trip! it was sort of eerie driving on a deserted freeway with all these abandond cars just sitting on the side of the road . . . we made it home safely and got to bed around 1:30am . . . and i still came to work . . . silly me.
things i am excited about that have nothing to do with christmas (and everything to do with modern cenima):
~
the davinci code is being made into a move that opens in may 2006, starring tom hanks and
audry tautou (i love her! and i happen to love that book--it is so liberating for women!)
~
xmen is also coming out next year . . . finally! call me a nerd, but i secretly LOVE super-hero movies and the xmen are some of my favorites!
~pirates of the carribean 2 and 3 are in production . . . very excited about that as well. since i, of course, heart pirates.
this just in (ok, not really, but i had to segue somehow):
a week ago, i saw
the breakfast club for the first time . . . and i was like "emilio!!!"
i also saw "the lion the witch and the wardrobe" and i have one question . . . "why does liam neeson get to have all the fun?"
huh. i've watched a lot of movies lately. what is wrong with me?
i did however make it through my one week goal of not drinking coffee. the chocolate goal was never met. i only made it 4 days without giving in. but, i think i have gone another week without coffee without even noticing it or choosing it. no headaches either! i am currently drinking apple cider (because when it is snowy outside one MUST have something warm to drink!)
ok, enough babbling (plus, my server at work is messing up), i am off to the annual holiday ornament exchange for my work (sounds adultish, but really, it's fun).
cheers!

so, i saw some polk-a-dots on loo's myspace . . .
and i got to thinking about this time when . . .
it was the bridal shower that my bridesmaids had thrown for me almost two years ago . . . they had chosen an 80's prom theme for the party and we were all dressed in hideous dresses. sitting around the room were mostly my friends from college along with a few older women including my mother.
as i am opening presents and i pick up this bag. it is yellow with different colored polk-a-dots all over it.
my mother, always the prim and proper one, says (in front of EVERYONE), "you know, it used to be a sin to wear polk-a-dots."
everyone stops and looks at her.
"really?" i am incredulous (is that the proper use and spelling of that word?), "why is that, mom?"
"because they reminded men of nipples."
"oh."
with everyone's undivided attention . . . how do you segue out of that one??
my bridemaids and i decided that it would be a funny joke for them to all wear polk-a-dots in my wedding or at least to the rehersal and rehersal dinner . . . heh. now everytime i see polk-a-dots, i think of my mother.
and nipples.
(i never thought of those things before my mom said that, but now i do.)
on a sort of related note, this is my beautiful mother-in-law, my husband and i at my cousin-in-law's wedding:

my holiday wish-list
i got this idea from my friend ava who posted her list on her live journal (link in sidebar) . . . it seemed fun.Step One: Make a post to your blog containing a list of 10 holiday wishes; the wishes can be anything at all, just make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want. If you wish for real life things, make sure you include contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you. Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines.Step Two: Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part: if you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not; it's your call! There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Wish & it might come true. Give & you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.1. to sleep in, create art, and spend time fixing up my apartment (i have really let it slide . . . )
2. i want a pair of brown boots that look like
this3. a tattoo
4. coffee dates with old friends*
5. a date with my husband
6. a massage
7. a new house for my mom and dad and sisters (one that isn't falling apart, is semi-organized and doesn't look like pack-rats live there)
8. a new car for my parents (my mom has to roll down the driver-side window to open the door and get out--that isn't even safe!)
9. a plane ticket to san diego to visit my friend sage
10. a plant ticket to europe!
-------------------
if you make a holiday wish-list, let us know by commenting on this post so we can check out your wishes too.*yes, i am drinking coffee again (i made it through my week!!)

i just ate two pieces of chocolate
and almost immediately my stomach and head started to hurt.
this must be my punishment.
at least is was dark chocolate. it has some anit-oxidant effects. so it's partially good for me.
i made it five days so far without coffee and three without chocolate.
at least i am honest about when i mess up. i don't have to tell you. in fact, i could totally lie and say, "i haven't eaten any form of sugar for three months and i have lost 30 pounds and this is what i look like now:"

but i wont lie. so there.

my head hurts . . .
so, i am totally having withdrawl headaches from not having chocolate or coffee. i feel like crap. i didn't realize i was so dependant on these legal drugs. i do confess that i gave in and ate two small pieces of chocolate yesterday just as i was leaving work . . . but i felt cross-eyed and yucky.

this is my husband jon, playing guitar in our dining room. i love the lighting in this picture.

well, the weekend at the coast was great! free alcohol at the rehersal dinner and the wedding, got to meet some of the extended family that i hadn't met yet, it was beautifully rainy all weekend. no one else was at the hotel, so we had the hot tub all to ourselves. we got to visit our favorite book store in lincoln city (robert's book shop).
did you know that there is this place in lincoln city that is a toast bar? they seriously have toasters on tables where you buy bread and toast it and try different kinds of jam on it! they also sell sandwiches, and bait, and sex toys. totally greast and totally random!
-----------------------

jon and i in our basement stairwell. my friend "c" took this picture during our "family portrait" session.
----------------------
one thing that did happen this weekend that made me smile was that two guys at the exact same time said to jon about me "but she looks like kate winslet!" flattered.
-----------------------

this is jon with his favorite little girl. she is one of his best friend's daughters. the only baby in the entire world that he actually likes!
-----------------------
i have developed a new appreciation for outlet malls and double-sided tape.
-----------------------

jon and i at the pumplin patch on sauvie island (he's let me cut his hair since then).
----------------------

jon and "d" with their pumpkins. they were such kids when it came to finding the perfect pumkin! isn't oregon beautiful?!?!
-----------------------
my co-worker brought her puppy by our building yesterday. i told him i loved him. his name was "gus." (short for agustus of course).
i want a dog!!
----------------------

jon and his boys. this was the night before jake (third from the left) left for arizona (he is the one who sings the song i have in the sidebar).
----------------------
my
post secret book came in the mail yesterday! so did my christmas gift for jon . . . can't tell you what it is though because he reads my blog sometimes.

wow.
i am eating fast food right now.
i mean, it is just a salad and some fries, but still. it's wendy's.
i think i am breaking a loooooong record. the last time i can remember eating bonafide fast food (panda express and quizno's don't count) was back in august or something . . .
my moments of fast food weakness are few and far between . . .
these fries are horrible. i hope the salad is better.

hooray!
i am leaving for the weekend! we are going to lincoln city for three days and two nights! my husband's cousin is getting married, so we will see the whole family. i am really looking forward to being at the oregon coast in the winter . . . sigh . . .
i have decided not to eat chocolate or have coffee for an entire week (the wedding doesn't count, of course) . . . i had two donuts yesterday though (they didn't have chocolate on them!) so it doesn't mean i am doing a good job at it. i had just been eating so much chocolate lately, i decided to practice telling myself "no" for a while . . .
see you in a few days!
