dentistry is violent

i had to have 2 cavities filled on thursday.

i thought it was only one . . . but it turns out there were two. one on each side of my mouth. blech.

so, they put me in the torture seat and give me some sunglasses to wear. the dentist then proceeds to stick the longest needles EVER in my mouth . . . i later learned that dentists actually stick those needles all the way up into the spongey part of your masseter bone and inject the novocaine there so that the nerve root is totally numb (gross).

i NEVER take pain killers so this stuff works really well on me (thank god for low tolerance to pain meds).

however, they begin to drill. right away! of course, i flinch as soon as air gets into my tooth. and my dentist says "oh, looks like you're not quite ready. we'll give you half a minute for that to take effect." then they both walk out of the room . . .

what did you think? that i would be numb immediately???

they come back and start drilling again. and wham bam, thank you ma'am the filling is done in less than a minute. it was a really shallow cavity so it was no big deal . . . the one on the other hand however was in between the teeth so it was going to be harder to get to.

"have you ever had a rubber dam?" asks my dentist.

a rubber wha--? i think.

"i don't know" i reply, feeling a bit of tooth on my numb tongue and trying to get it out of my mouth before i swallow it.

so he explains it as they go. this would be considered torture if they hadn't numbed me first . . .
First, they take a clamp and stick on the rotting tooth (wiggling it around of course). then they take this 5 by 5 (ish) inch square of flat green rubbery stuff with holes cut in it for my teeth and stretch it across my mouth. they take floss and use the floss to shove the rubber between the teeth on the left side of my mouth (have you ever had rubber stuck between your teeth? ok, that sounded dirty . . . i guess i mean anything stuck between your teeth thicker than floss . . . it isn't comfortable). i am numb at this point, so i can't feel poain, but i can feel pressure and they are effing moving my teeth around in my mouth for crying out loud!

anyway, after this, they put a little wedge between my teeth to push them apart and then they took this circular clamp thing (like a springform pan for making cheesecake . . . only tooth-sized) and put it around my tooth and tightened it . . . if i could have seen what i looked like in the mirror . . . with green rubber over my mouth, black sunglasses on, four teeth sticking through the rubber, a clamp, a springfoarm and a wedge all sticking out of my mouth . . . ugh.

"can you breath through your nose alright?" my dentist asks.

it's a little late for that i think. i nod slightly. i can't really feel my left nostril actually because they put so much novocaine up there. speaking of which, he also put the needle between my teeth and shot some novocaine in there. that sure hurt (when he stuck the needle in my gums!)!

they proceed to drill and fill the tooth. this time i see chips of tooth flying out of my mouth. they use this big metal suction thing to suck all the tooth bits out of my mouth. they keep banging against my other teeth with all the stuff they are sticking in and out of my mouth. i want to say, "you are going to chip one of my other teeth!" but i can't move my mouth and if i could, it would just sound like "ooh aah goooeee ooo sshhhib uhn ah mah otsher teef!"

finally it's over and they yank the hideous rubber dam out of my mouth.

"don't eat anything crunchy for the rest of the day on that side of your mouth" the dentist/torture master says to me.

i wont be eating anything for the rest of the day at all i think to myself (that didn't end up being true . . . kristi let me have some of her award-winning chili later that day).

and they sent me home.

my smile was crooked . . . i was numb on both sides. i couldn't talk. or eat or smile.
the novocaine wore off in about 5 or 6 hours and man was i sore . . . even this morning when i woke up my gums were sort of angry. i think they changed the way my teeth sit in my mouth.

you know what else i hate? the sound of metal scraping against my teeth. those little pointy scrapy things they use to get plaque off your teeth . . . it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. ew.

in conclusion: i will floss every day for the rest of my life.

why do i do such airheaded things?

so . . . embarrassing thing #547 happened to me last tuesday . . .

i had my first night of working in the clinic at my massage therapy school . . . my carpool friends and i got their early so we would have time to prepare and get over being nervous. i was distracted by my nerves and eager to get in the building.

so much so that i locked my keys in the car. while they were still in the ignition.

shit.

the car was running. the lights were on. i had 15 minutes to get to class and the clock was ticking.

i called my husband. no answer.

why doesn't he ever have his phone on when i need him?!

i decided to just keep calling over and over and over.

about 8 calls later, he answers his phone.

by this time, i am sobbing uncontrollably and i have less than ten minutes to get to class.

luckily he was on broadway not too far away from where i was (near the convention center). he walked over and unlocked the car for me. but not before i was all flustered and late to class with red and puffy eyes . . .

my classmates were wonderful to me and my massages went allright, but why do i do such airheadded things?!

and thanks to my husband for saving the day and not making fun of me!!

alito is a tool

he wont answer direct questions about important issues. he dances. he skirts. he avoids. he sweettalks his way out of things and doesn't make any sort of firm statement about anything that is valid.

he's a pawn.

he gives me the heebie jeebies.

and if approving him for supreme court isn't a step backwards, i don't know what is.

i am in mourning . . .

my favorite band pedro the lion is no more.

tw and david went separate ways and david doesn't want to continue doing pedro stuff without tw. who knew that my last pedro show happened this summer? if i would have known it was going to the be last, i would have savored it more . . .

here's what the site administrator for the pedro message board has to say:

"here's the deal...

Dave will be making music, touring, and releasing records under his own name. He'll still be writing and singing the songs. Just not under the name Pedro The Lion. The short term plan is for Dave to do the Undertow Orchestra tour in February (see that other post) and then do some solo touring and maybe some Headphones touring in the spring and summer.

We'll probably have some sort of web and show only CD ready by Feb or March. It'll be Dave doing stripped down versions of Pedro songs and maybe a new song or two. We don't know exactly what songs yet.

Then Dave will work on a proper studio album in the spring and summer that will be released by Jade Tree in early 2007.

There will most likely be a new Headphones recorded by the end of 2006 for release by Suicide Squeeze sometime after the solo album.

TW decided that being a full-time musician and being away from his family 100+ days a year was not the best thing for him now. Dave does not want to call what he does Pedro The Lion without TW's involvement. There are no hard feelings, no weirdness, or anything dramatic to worry about. TW did not break up Pedro The Lion. Dave has been thinking about dropping the band name for a long time. They are still good friends. TW will continue to work on The Soft Drugs recordings and i'm sure will be playing shows in and around Seattle whenever he can.

This is not to say that the Pedro The Lion name will never be used again. But for as far as we are planning ahead, there will be no new releases or touring using the band name Pedro The Lion.

I hope everyone is not too bummed out. I know it seems like Pedro The Lion is breaking up. Remember, Pedro The Lion is one of my favorite bands too. So I can’t help being a little sad.

But it’s more like a shift in energy and not a really a break-up at all.

Dave and I are really excited about what's coming up. The Undertow Orchestra tour is going to be amazing. To have these four guys touring together is a dream come true for me. It's an amazing chance for Dave to collaborate with these other artists that he has great respect for and do something new with his music.

I hope you all stick around."

mmmm . . . friday . . .

jon is back from camping in the rainforest. they took d's dog. he is a husky named kodiak. they took him to keep them warm. he wouldn't have protected them i don't think. they came back early because it rained the entire time (um, what did you think would happen? its the rainforest!). they were soaking wet and dirty! but i think they had fun.

my friends took good care of me while he was gone--thank you!!--giving me rides (he took the car) and letting me sleep in their houses (and beds).

my mother-in-love and brother-in-love are staying at our house tonight. brother is flying back to florida where he is stationed in the air force . . . his christmas leave is over :(

then mary and brian from kansas are coming to our house saturday (after my cousin's wedding) and staying with us for a week! we met them on couch surfing and will be hosting them while they apartment and job search as well as get to know the city. we love having people stay with us, but we both also start school on monday so this week is going to be wild! i haven't even looked at my list of required books for the term yet . . .

two great stories from the week:

#1: tuesday, i went to a friend's house and we had girl night. pajamas, slippers, french onion soup, cheesey bread, popcorn, applecranberry crisp, and the second season of 21 jumpstreet!! let me tell you, it was fabulous!

#2: wednesday, i went to thai food (mmmm thai orchid!) for lunch with my boss and another co-worker and as i was reading the paper that my chopsticks came in (it said: "welcome to chinese restaraunt. please try your nice chinese food with chopsticks the traditional and typical of chinese glonous history and cultual" spell check that.) and i dropped the paper on the floor. leaning over in my chair to pick it up (so i wouldn't actually have to stand up out of my chair and bend over to get it) my chair slid across the hardwood floor and tipped over, leaving me sprawled gracefully on the floor. the other 8 people in the restaraunt let out a collective "gasp!" and "is she ok?!?" mortified, i laugh and turn red and get back in my chair, composing myself. "i'm ok." i giggle.
"quick!' shouts my boss, "everyone fall out of your chair so that tabitha jane wont feel alone in her embarrassment!" he and my co-worker fake like they are loosing their balance and are going to fall out of their chairs. only, my boss actually goes through with it and acts like he fell out of his chair, landing on his butt on the ground!!
"thanks. that means a lot to me. that was very nice of you. now get off the floor!"
as we were leaving the restaraunt, i said "hey guys, remember that time we went to thai food and i fell out of my chair in front of the whole restaraunt?"
"yeah... that was great." they replied.

what's a girl to do?

when her husband goes camping in the olympic national rain forest for three days???
i can't sleep in our apartment when he isn't there . . . so i'll be staying with friends i suppose. our apartment was built in 1911 . . . there has got to be a ghost in there somewhere.

uuuuuhhh . . . resoultions for this year include:
~continue to take my life back from "the man." finish massage school, get my license and make my own hours!
~get more active (be healthy and exercise! i have not seen this much cellulite since "what's eating gilbert grape?"!).
~write more letters
~spend time reading and meditating

i had monday off to "observe the new year holiday." mostly, just because americans are workaholics compared to some other countries who have waaaaay more paid holidays than we do . . . so we get new year's day paid off (or the next business day. which happened to be monday).
so, to "celebrate" jon and i spent the day cleaning and organizing our apartment. we fixed things that were broken, deep cleaned the kitchen, dusted behind things, rearranged some stuff, actually took that pile of stuff at the bottom of the attic stairs up to the attic, and went to thrift stores to find frames for some art that has been on our walls for a while sans frame.
while in line to pay for our fabulous finds . . . something amazing happened. well, amazing might not be the right word, but i ain't gonna go back and think of a new word. anyway, two groups in front of us in the line was this huge family with lots of children. the smallest girl was sitting in the cart. they were disputing with the cashier about the price of their purchases and generally ignoring the little girl entirely.
i glanced at her and thought to myself, "she is being so good and quiet. she is just patiently waiting to be wheeled out of the store and taken out of the cart. what a good girl!"
yet, she was being too quiet.
i looked down.
a big yellow puddle was just below the cart on the linoleum floor of the thrift store. a few drips were falling from the cart, slowly making the puddle grow.
"did that girl just piss?" jon asked me under his breath.
"yep, and no one noticed," i replied. "should we say something?"
the family finalized their transaction and wheeled the cart out of the store. what a surprise they were in for when they went to lift their little angel out of the cart.
we were about to say something when man in line in front of us stepped directly into the puddle of piss.
"ah, let's not tell him. it's too late. it would only make it worse," jon reasoned.
i supposed he was right. i hate stepping in exrement, so i figured it would be better if he just didn't know.
when it was our turn to pay, we carefully stepped around the puddle and informed the cashier of the surprise that the little one had left behind. but not quickly enough, the man behind us had apparently not seen the puddle and wheeled his cart directly into it.

does no one look where they are stepping anymore? does no one notice their surroundings anymore? does no one pay attention to what their children are doing anymore?

geesh.
