sasquatch - day THREE!!!
thanks for being so patient everyone!
life is nuts. work is nuts. i am tired. i need some time in the woods.
and yes, the flaming lips performed "yoshimi." it is now the husband's favorite FL song.
last night i went to lola's room to see my new friend Bre's band Rye Hollow play . . . this other band called Damon Castillo played too . . . they basically rocked.
have i mentioned that the husband is currently taking a german immersion course at lewis and clark college and is only speaking german for 5 weeks?!!??!?! even to me! it's been interesting. and slightly frustrating. but also very good for our (esp his) language skills.
ok, on to day three:
woke up.
breakfast.
sponge baths.
VERY SUNNY DAY.
started the day off right with some arctic monkeys, etc . . .
J and R ditched us during Nada Surf and the Decemberists so they could go see some other band (i totally forgot who . . . sheesh) . . . but we stuck around at the main stage for them.

the nada surf bassist has these long beautiful dreads and played the whole show with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth

at one point during the decemberists, all the band memebers were lying on the ground playing their instruments.
the scenery was gorgeous: (get it? gorge? heh heh.)

sitting in front of us during the show was this family with an 8 year old son . . . they left him alone for a while and he was laying there on the ground holding a beer bottle and putting his mouth on it at times. not sure if he was drinking out of it . . . but i got a good picture of him laying on the ground, gripping the bottle. i didn't think i should put it on the web though . . .
so, then one of the highlights of the day:
matisyahu!!!
he was everything you'd hope for and more. so groovy. and lanky. and at ease with himself and his faith. a rainbow came out and he talked about how god made a promise and how we all make mistakes. he actually said that god made a mistake . . . huh.
he was basically an incredible performer. and all around awesome individual. :)
toward the end of matisyahu, the husband and i left the mainstage to see the headphones play:

when david was doing pedro the lion he used to have question and answer time . . . now with the headphones, he has joke time . . . he told the joke i told earlier about bees giving milk. if you missed it, scroll down . . . its there somewhere.
after missing damien jurado (we bought some ice cream and some vegetarian t-shirts and tried to avoid the mud) we got settled in for death cab for cutie.

the only other times i've seen them have been out of doors as well . . . i wonder if i will ever have an indoors experience with death cab. anyway, they never played "transantlanticism" for which i might be holding a grudge. but they did play "passenger seat" my second favorite song of theirs.
the funny thing was (i never noticed this before) is that he is constantly rocking/step-touching back and forth while he plays. even while he is playing the keyboards. sort of makes me have motion sickness. and it makes it hard to hear him when his mouth is constantly moving from side to side on the mic.
but i will say that it was wicked cool when they brought out another mini drumset and he and his drummer played together for a good long while. very cool.
death cab was followed by beck. the end all to the weekend. last day. last band. beck.
nice.

and yet again, i fell asleep. but i did not miss the tambourine song. the fact that they had marionette puppets (that looked exactly like them!) on a stage behind them acting out the entire show (and projected on a screen for us to see). they came out in bear costumes at one point and had a tussle. they had a "mockumentary" with their puppets . . . some video montage of footage they had taken during the day . . . at one point a puppet said "will you exfoliate my bicept?" okaaaaay . . . the part i did miss was when they brought out a table with place settings and played percussion on it . . . with the silverware and cups and stuff. wish the husband had woken me up for that!
since then, i have decided that i really really dig beck. should they come to town again, i will take a nap and THEN go see their show. love. it.
good music.
seriously.
i am sorry for sleeping.
please forgive me.
that night, we got back to camp and the wind was CRAZY!!! our tent would have blown over if it hadn't been for the fact that we had all the food inside it!
J lost all of her tent stakes and her tent blew over with her inside it the next morning while we were packing up camp!
here is our tent in the wind:

we almost lost the pirate flags i had attached to the tent . . . but don't be alarmed -- i salvaged them!
we drove home . . . stopping at an awesome rest stop where J rode one of those horses that you put a quarter in and it rocks forward and backward :) . . .
good times. good music. good friends. AWESOME bands.
what can i say? i was a happy girl.

and there you have it. i hope it was all it was cracked up to be for you . . . thanks for your patience.
next thing to wait for: pictures from my sister's wedding!

sasquatch revisited - day two
so . . . it's been too frackin' hot around here to do anything at all . . . please forgive the long wait for "day two" . . .
also, i am currently looking for a new job so any prayers, good energy or positive thoughts sent out for that situation would be greatly appreciated! so far, i've gotten two calls back on resumes and i am working on one helluvahn email to my current boss . . . we'll see . . .
ok, on to sasquatch . . .
-----------------------------------------------------
completely exhausted we skipped s'mores and went straight to bed . . . in the morning we had scrambled eggs and toast (cooked by non other than the husband from heaven) and j and i bathed in the river (cold!) with dr braumer's peppermint castile soap (hooray!).
the husband had checked the weather before we left and today was supposed to be the best day . . . sunny with clouds . . . and rain was forcast for tomorrow . . .
the day was going well . . . we met up with our friend d and his brother for the day . . . we were enjoying the sights and sounds of sufjan stevens and the red, white and blue, all american patriotic 50 states band . . .

little did we know what was coming for us.
iron and wine played after sufjan. the best musical moment of the weekend was when they played their final song (lilith) and it started lightly sprinkling while the sun was still shining beautifully. gorgeous!
then, during neko case . . . . the dark clouds approached. and the HAIL began! there we were, 20,000 people huddled under tarps, blankets, jackets, hiding in port-o-potties . . . whatever we could do to stay dry. the hail was so big and coming down so hard that it really hurt! there were about six of us under our blanket. every now and then one of us would peek out to see how it was going . . . neko only got to sing three songs before they shut the stage down for TWO HOURS. about 5,000 people left. we stayed. we were cold and wet the rest of the day . . . but BEN HARPER was coming that night and we couldn't -- wouldn't -- miss it for the world! and not for some
kick-@$$ hail storm either!

cold and wet, we passed the time being silly.

jon actually had a waterproof jacket. lucky.
people started a slip n' slide in the hail while we waited for the show to start. if i knew i would have access to a warm shower afterwards, i would have joined in . . .
my best girl ever.

isn't she gorgeous?
they finally opened the stage back up and we enjoyed the sights, sounds, and comic antics of portland locals, the shins:

and then . . . came . . . BEN HARPER!

my girl and i had to hold hands tightly and strive for breath when he came out on stage . . . sigh . . . he played some good tunes and did a 45 minute encore! he played "burn one down" (did i mention the lovely smell of "rosemary" that permeated the entire weekend?), and all the crazygood songs from his new album. we only wish he would have played "amen omen." what a great song that is.
leon, his drummer, kicks ichial tuberosity.
ben harper was supposed to close out the night, but because of the hail, they switched the schedule around and the flaming lips shut us down for the night.

we were exhausted, cold and wet, and wanting to go back to camp after ben harper, but we couldn't find one of our group members, so we stayed for the flaming lips experience. we were not dissapointed. they started their set out with their rendition of queen's "bohemiean rhapsody." everyone sang along and danced around. they had about 40 fans onstage with them dressed as santa or aliens . . . and videos . . . and crazy.
following the show, we warned people of the huge pile of vomit on the stairs (its amazing how many people still stepped it in!) as we waited for our friend. it is also amazing how much TRASH is left on the ground after a day at sasquatch. it was very sad . . . i would have stayed and picked it up if it meant that i could have met ben harper . . . instead, we wearily made our way back to camp, made some s'mores and crawled into bed . . . sasquatch day two had ended.

SASQUATCH (revisited . . . sheepish grin)
"it's about time!" you must be thinking . . . yeah well . . . i sort of had some stuff going on (sister's wedding, finals, etc) . . . and loading all these pictures takes a while.
so . . . sasquatch fest back in mumblemumblememorialdaymumbleweekendmumble was AWESOME! so awesome in fact that i would like to revisit it right now!
we left thursday night at about 10pm and drove all night out to the gorge. after getting lost because the guy with the directions to the campsite was sleeping, we found our campsite, set up the tents and fell asleep by 6am.
our tents, clothesline and the view . . . in the morning, jon made us breakfast . . . pancakes and eggs -- nice!

we were right by the river . . . which had its ups and downs. fall asleep to the lapping of the water, go to the river for water to boil and wash the dishes or to take a bath . . . but it is WINDY on the gorge . . . results of the wind to be seen later.
the music didn't start until around 5 or so that day, so we had all day to set up camp, play, do crossword puzzels, play badmitten, get caught in the rain, try to start a fire, hang our wet clothes over the fire to dry and to CATCH MY HUSBAND's PANTS ON FIRE! (good thing he wasn't wearing them!)

he did, however, wear them for the rest of the weekend. crazy.
he also did all of our cooking for the weekend. he LOVES to cook while camping! he made us this yummy veggie dinner before we headed off to the shows! tofu burger patties with roasted trader joe's (frozen) vegetables and a lentel and kidney bean middle eastern mix thing from tj's as well.

mmmmmmmm . . .
so then we went to the metal/goth day of sasquatch . . . bauhaus, wolfmother, whatever . . . bauhaus was actually sort of entertaining . . . it was like watching "the rocky horror picture show" take itself way too seriously.
anyway, by the time nine inch nails came onstage, i was exhausted . . . we had been awake for over 24 hours, then slept for about 4 and were awake camping all day . . . i was TIRED. so i listened to a few songs and promptly lay down on the cement and fell asleep. i woke up for the big finale though . . .

then we waited in the parking lot forever to get out and drive to our campsite (no way were we camping at the festival camping spot for $44 a night. ew. we had an awesome spot by the river for FREE!!!)

train (wreck) of thought
so, the husband and i are slowly getting ready for our trip to germany . . . we've even been to REI so i can get a new backpack for the trip! we've been in several times trying to find the best pack for the trip and for my body. we finally settled on a plumb colored gregory deva women's pack. we had to re-size the arm straps (smaller) and waist bands (bigger . . . poopie) . . . so we are waiting for them to arrive . . .
anxiously.
with bated breath.
we also stayed up until 2am playing scrabble with some friends on friday night. i won. but that doesn't really count because by the end, i was playing tiles for three people (because they pooped out) . . . i didn't cheat with their tiles, but i still won.
one of my sisters graduated from high school last weekend. she's moving to oklahoma to go to school. i'm gonna miss her.
we went to a
portland timbers soccer game this weekend . . . i really enjoyed it. i think i could be more of a soccer fan than i am. plus the games are only like $10 for a ticket.
i am thinking about checking out a baseball game soon too . . . the
portland beavers . . . i don't know, they don't sound very exciting.
sunday we went to a book reading at
powells books. author (and revolutionary)
brian mclaren was reading from and speaking about his new book
the secret message of jesus. it was a beautiful, revolutionary conversation about how social justice and the kingdom walk hand in hand . . . i got goosebumps several times . . .
working on finals right now . . . almost done with school for good!! (until i decide to go back again . . . why am i so addicted to learning??)

Driving to work today I saw this guy on the corner who looked a lot like my friend Jared who died a few years ago in a car wreck. It was strange. To see this man standing on the corner waiting for the light to change so he could cross the street. I wanted to get out of my car and shake him by the shoulders. To say (perhaps a little too loudly) “you don’t understand how fragile your life is!!” Because that is what he reminded me. standing there. looking like the walking dead. As I drove past him and got a better look, I could see that there was no way he could actually look like Jared at all. It was sort of like the time I was in Germany and swore that I saw Bruce Willis get on the train on the opposite side of the tracks. Light and shadow have a way of playing tricks on you . . . they leave things out that your brain fills in. This time, my brain placed Jared into the gaps. What a strange way to start the day – by having a conversation in my head with my dead friend personified by a completely unfamiliar pedestrian.
Life has a way of playing tricks on your like that. And I suppose we are left to fill in the blanks.

. . . and ideas are bulletproof!
on saturday, lucky me got to meet and hang out with fellow blogger
arwen!
we wandered through my neighborhood thrift and antique shops, stopped and saw the friendly people at starbucks store #420 (really, that's their store number), walked by the
church i got married in, snuck up behind this huge mansion that is for sale and saw a
great movie at a
great theatre. plus, as she said, we got some free cds at
music millenium on burnside. i got me some tori amos . . . and paid for a replacement cranberries album (
to the faithful departed . . . best ever!).
it was a great, relaxing day . . . ended by the biggest round of laundry ever. jon and i were at the wash center for hours! i still haven't got it all put away.
i like meeting blogging friends.
arwen: you rock. thanks for being so at ease meeting me. i could have been a complete whack job and you were as cool as a cucumber. it was awesome to talk to you and get to know you a little bit more . . . let's do it again sometime! (the beach is calling me!) i loved hearing your stories! especially the awesome one about the road trip to vegas. i now know you can be counted on for any spur of the moment wild ideas i might have . . .
huh. i've seen
V for Vendetta twice in the last week now . . . makes me want to start a ruckus.

we even did the electric slide!
ok . . . thanks for your patience . . . here is evidence from 80s prom:
my girlfriends and i arrived at the prom in all our splendor . . . snagged a table and watched people arrive. our favorites of the night were these individuals that we dubbed "napoleon dynomite" and "mermaid" . . . because that's what they looked like. her dress was one of the most fabulously 80s of the evening . . .

(sorry if it is too dark to see the picture)
here are the girls (with a joshua tree poster behind us!):

(i was not as 80seriffic this year . . . i didn't even know i was going until the day before. but i did have my off the shoulder shirt, side ponytail, leggings under my skirt, etc . . . my friend char even MADE a bubble skirt for the night!)

the bon jovi tee made an appearance again this year . . .

i'd say natalie was the most 80s of all of us . . . i promised i wouldn't tell anyone that it was the same dress she wore last year (oops! was that out loud?!?)
most of the other pictures i took from the evening are really dark . . . there was one of a bunch of 80s-afied people doing the electric slide . . . and one of this girl who thought she was madonna and basically had the dance moves memorized from "vogue" -- she was awesome!
last year there was a guy dressed like michael jackson from thirller and he danced supergreat!
alas, he was not there this year . . .
and neither were most of you . . . next year you shall be there!!!
oh yeah, p.s., a picture of j and i outside of the tent at cirque du soleil (one of the most awesome experiences of my life!!):

pay no attention to the fact that my eyes are half closed because of the bright bright sunshine.
