busy busy busy
things at work are the opposite of slow and boring at the moment.so, to keep you entertained, i will post what the packaging of my chopsticks said the other day. this is EXACTLY how it reads (grammar, capitalization and punctuation have all been kept intact):

that being said, i went and saw kung fu hustle last night with the man (got out of class early!!). i really liked it. i think it had some things to say about levels of "mastery" and respect and good and evil and such . . . don't have time to get into it at the moment though, i've gotta get back to working.

in other news, we went to the river with friends yesterday for a swim and a quick bask in the sun (friends included niki and her husband). great fun to be had by all i do believe. i got a nice burn on my shoulders though . . . tandem sunscreening sometimes causes one to assume that the other already covered an important and vulnerable spot (such as the shoulders). ahh, it'll heal. good thing i kept the aloe in the fridge since the 4th of july when jon burned his feet to a crisp at the beach!
also included in my weekend:
two weddings, a trip to saturday market, consumption of tots at kennedy school, a bike ride to hawthorne (powells and the bagdad pub were calling), a bike ride to trader joe's (aka mecca), dinner with friends (jon tried to teach their 4 month old daughter how to crawl!), and the reception of a package from my friend Sandi P who currently lives in bangladesh (she sent us this awesome tapestry/sheet! so beautiful!). that and some sleep and laundry and stuff made up the weekend . . . whew. no wonder i didn't fit any studying in . . .
just thought i'd keep you updated!

late night
when to jeff r's wedding at edgefield last night. beautiful wedding. saw katie h (i know she got married, but i can't remember her new last initial) and a BUNCH of old cascade friends, including amber (who really looks amazing!) and charlotte.beautiful sunset.
drinks weren't free, but they were enjoyed.
picked up my sister and went to biddy's to see an old friend from high school play in his band. (it wasn't actually that band that i linked to but it was some of the same people.) they were ok. they did a lot of covers from bands like howie day and jane's addiction.
when i offered my husband another drink and he said, "no. everyone is beautiful and i am feeling good," we decided to leave while one of us could still drive.
i don't think the high school friends recognized us anyway. we hadn't seen them in about 6 years.
and that is how we spent our 11 month anniversary. that's right people, the one year mark is coming up!

do you live in the portland or seattle areas? are you looking for a cat?my friend needs to find a good home for his cat.
her name is tally. she is clean, house trained and de-clawed (not his choice). he rescued her from abuse as a kitten, so she may not be too happy around kids. she is very independant and will let you know if she doesn't want to be pet. she is a very good cat, but he cannot keep her in his apartment (no pets allowed) and his neighbors are not cat people, so they are getting tired of keeping her for him.

let me know if you live in the seattle, portland, or salem area and are interested in taking her home with you. my friend will be in town this weekend and we could probably work it all out then.

val or vin? no contest here.
my friends shaun and jessica got married yesterday. an old friend of mine joey and his wife came up for the wedding (joey was in it). they live sorta far away, so we were happy to see them. after the wedding we all went over to a friend's house to watch a movie. they chose, the pacifier. because we wanted to see our friends and it was something cheap to do (we are broke) and not because we actually wanted to see this movie, we went.which leads me to my question. what is up with vin diesel? i mean, i know he's all buff and chiseled or whatever, but he sort of has a weak forhead. i will admit that he has one of the deepest voices i have ever heard, but his speech? well, its a bit neanderthal-like.
not to be seen as rude and horrid however, i will say that i have enjoyed this website for a rather long time. (just hit f5 or refresh for a new and VERY true fact about vin).
yes, i love the site. i think it is funny. but i still don't get what all the hype is about him . . . for my money, he ain't that great.
maybe i'm just old fashioned because i went to see top gun for flicks on the bricks on friday and i STILL SWOON over val kilmer.
bottom line: i choose val over vin any day . . .

yesterday's adventure
yesterday, i was on the phone in my office and this thing comes flying past my head, hits the wall and falls down behind my desk."what the--!"
at first, i think someone has thrown something at my head, narrowly missed and lost whatever it was that they threw between my desk and the wall. i get off the phone as quickly as i can when i realize that it was a bird that had flown into my office and into the wall!
the back story is that we have been hearing baby birds chirping up in the chimney of the fireplace in our waiting room (the office i work in is in an old house that has been converted, so the waiting room is what used to be the living room). i guess one of the birds (baby or momma or something) flew out of the chimney and was flying around the waiting room freaking out. it then flew into the receptionist's office (next to mine) toward her window. at the last second, it realized the window was shut and changed directions, ending up behind my desk in the process. since i had been on the phone i missed all of the aforemention adventure. now that we are all up to speed i shall continue.
i peer down the crack between the wall and the desk and see this little, frightened bird, scrambling to climb up the wall and get away. we try to coax it out with paper or anything that can reach down there, but it only frightens it more. so we wait. it begins to inch out from behind the desk to the space underneath my desk where my feet go when i sit (can you picture what i am talking about here?) it keeps flapping its wings and getting them stuck in the computer wires and i am thinking "great, it's not gonna be able to fly."
it proves me wrong at that second and flys out from under my desk. by this point my co-worker has opened the windows and shut the door of my office so that if it does fly out, it will go out via the window. but it hasn't figured this out and there are long lace curtains over my windows anyway, so it just flys around my office in a frantic circle. pooping.
i'm covering my head and ducking and wondering what to do next. it finally lands on one of my curtains, clinging to the lace. i grab a plastic basket that has been holding stuff for a project i was working on and sort of do the thing were you cover something up and then slide something flat underneath it so as to catch it (like what i used to do as a kid when we would trap bees in cups . . . what was i thinking?). anyway, so we get the bird in the basket and it is holding on to the side of the thing for dear life. we place the basket in the windowsill and step back.
ok, little bird, you can fly away at any time. you are free.
one minute goes by.
"great," i think, "we've broken it. and i have poop all over my office."
and then it flies away and is across the street before we know it.
what an adventure!

did i mention that ben harper is in concert in portland tonight and i will be missing it because i can't afford the scalpers prices of over $100 a ticket? yeah, jerks, why don't you just live in pensylvania and buy out all the ben harper tickets for portland so the show sells out and then sell them on ebay to desparate hippies for over $100 bucks when those poor desperate hippies could have paid the original $35 price and still been able to afford to eat their organic veggies for the month?!i'm pissed today.

11. being a borderline hippie, the culture here (in portland) really rocks for me (the smaller towns of oregon are like hickville and that doesn't work so well for me).

2) If I gave you $5000 and you had to leave the country for one month, where would you go, what would you do?
i would go to europe! right now we are trying to plan a long trip to europe that would mostly focus on being in germany and working on our german (to better jon's chances of getting in to a good phd program). if we were only going to be there for one month, my goal would be to fill just my backpack with the essentials (toothbrush, deoderant -- wait europeans don't wear it, i wont need it! -- underwear, camera, sketch pad, train ticket, passport) and just go. stay in youth hostels, meet all kinds of awesome friends and learn as much as i can about the history and current culture of each new place i visit. mostly i want to expand my worldview!
3) Think of something that made you laugh really hard and long - tell us about it.
well, i remember one time recently when my husband and i were up pretty late talking in bed and he was almost falling asleep and was totally relaxing. he went to say something to me and totally drooled all over me! it was pretty funny. we both laughed for a long time.
4) What "profession" do you remember wanting to be when you were around 6 years old?
i wanted to be an artist. from the time i can remember i have always wanted to be an artist. my older sister and i used to play this game where we would cut little squares out of paper and then each draw on them. we would line them all up on the bed and then have my mom come in and pick out her five favorite. i remember being so proud because she always picked mine as her favorite!
5) You're given an assignment to fully research a subject. what would it be about and why? (could be person, place, situation, etc.)
wow . . . that is a really good question! there are so many things i want to know more about like global warming, antioxidants, the effects of pesticides, how to have the most healthy pregnancy and babies of ever, all sorts of historic events, my family's culture and history, the history of the awesome city that i live in . . . the list goes on! but i think right now i would choose -- drumroll please -- "the goddess cultures of prehistory." "why?" you ask. well, because i was raised in a very conservative christian culture that supresses women's abilities to really be involved in worship and religion and all of my life i have been asking the question "why." how does such a male dominated "sun" religion begin? the first narrative of the christian and jewish tradition in the book of genesis (aside from the creation myth) is a story that blames a woman for the entrance of sin and death into the world and subjugates her to the authority of men. what kind of religion is this? and how have women remained a loyal part of it ever since? before the emergence of this religion there is evidence of thriving "moon" religions with female deities that honored the earth and the cyclical nature of life. i want to know more about these religions and views of life and the world. i want to know how the sun religion came to replace the moon religion. i want to know what elements of the female deity remain in this new male oriented trinity as interpreted by religious leaders. i want to learn as much as i can about these traditions so that i can land somewhere in all of it. as a woman, i feel deeply connected to the earth, the seasons, the moon and i know i am a spiritual being of some sort, but i don't feel like that is being supported in the tradition i have come out of. now, friends who have known me a long time: don't worry, i am not just going off the deep end here. i am not going to become a witch or anything (not in your idea of what that word means) but i do need to find some sort of religious story or image (whether in the christian tradition or not) that affirms my identity as a woman. i need an image of a spiritual being that has some female elements in it. a warrior/father god with an obedient son is fine if you are a man, but how does that connect with women? we need images of a nurturing, mothering deity of peace and the constant change of the seasons. if i can find a way to reconcile those images with the christian tradition, maybe i will . . . but what i am saying here is that this is something i want to really research so that i will be more educated on the subject. i don't know if i am ready to totally throw myself into believing in innana or kali or anything, but i am ready to figure out where i want to be spiritually rather than just follow along with what i have been told all of my life.
maybe i've gone too far with this. and i don't really know if i have made myself too clear here, but i guess it will spark some interesting conversation . . . so comment away friends! thanks for letting me be honest.
