avant gard

a few weeks ago, there was this thing called honkfest in boston . . . lots of alt brass bands came together (the march fourth marching band from pdx was there!) for a big gathering of tubas, drums and other such lovely instruments . . . mixed with fishnets, stripes, glitter, top hats, wigs, masks and other lovely such burning man style attire . . . for one night they came down to providence to grace us with their energy and talent.

the event started in kennedy plaza (a park downtown by the bus mall). the bands warmed up and played a few spontanious songs together. there were people on stilts, clowns, hula hoops, children and adults alike dancing in the park . . . the noise and spectacle sure drew a crowd. then just near sunset, we took to the streets! the whole crowd and all the bands (maybe 4 or 5 by then . . . it grew to like 10 later in the night) took over washington street in unorganized, pre-planed mayhem . . . stopped traffic and paraded down to empire street to as220 (the local art co-op where my friend C lives).

i had met up with C at the park to watch the show and then we danced our little tooshies off down the street with the parade! people in costumes! stilts! music! balloons! streamers! public spectacle! loved it . . .

we all hung out on the street/sidewalk in front of as220 for a while. bands still erupting into spontanious performances. then the show moved inside.

each band took turns marching in playing their music . . . doing a set . . . having a few performers/mascots dance around with the crowd and then marching back out while the next band marched in.

i was such a happy girl!

one of the best nights of my life.

happy fall!

it's fall . . . and i am happy about it. i didn't know if i would be ready since we didn't really get much summer weather what with being in alaska and all. but the leaves are changing and crunching under our feet . . . the farmer's markets are full to the brim with squash and apples . . . my heart is settling in for the winter.

this past weekend, our "family" (the four roommates) plus our friend Lindsay drove out to Rehoboth Mass to visit the pumpkin patch. it was supposed to be a 15 minute drive. but we got lost . . . of course . . . and it took us 45 minutes. so we missed the last hayride of the day and had to pick our pumpkins from the ones for sale at the stand instead of from the patch itself . . . but we still had a great time! we pet goats, watched chickens, drank cider, laughed at the funny shapes that gourds can grow into, enjoyed the autumn sun, and found some lovely pumpkins to bring home with us. we also scored some pumpkin butter! yum!

lovely. now i will proceed to make some pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, more pumpkin cookies and perhaps some pumpkin bread with our pumpkins. lisa's is big enough that we will probably carve hers into a jack-o-lantern . . . spooooooky!

we are looking forward to hallowe'en fun - what other excuse to adults have to dress in costumes? and making plans as a house (lisa will probably go home) for a thanksgiving feast.

and after thanksgiving comes . . . christmas! i am so homesick i could die from happiness at the thought of flying back to oregon for christmas!

anyway . . . peace out y'all. happy fall. what are your traditions?

team mom

this year a bunch of the grad students from the history department at brown joined the flag football intermural league . . . they are all on a team together and play games every sunday night.

their first game was two sundays ago.

i, being self-dubbed the team mom, baked pumpkin cranberry cookies and brought them to the game.

the team was beaten sorely by a bunch of 19 yr old undergrads who clearly shouldn't have signed up for the lower division league.

morale was low at the end of the game. but the OTHER TEAM didn't have COOKIES!!! we did.

the end.
