we climbed a mountain!

i never thought i'd do it.
if you've ever been hiking with me, you'll know that i HATE going uphill. it's just not for me.
i preferr downhill. or even just a nice horizonal direction. even some easy slopes are ok. but hardcore, kick your butt uphill? no thanks.
so when we suddenly found ourselves with the day off on monday, what did we do?
we climbed mt roberts.
and since we'd already left the house for work with our lunches packed prepared to be outside all day, we just headed on over to the mountain, i was wearing galoshes. so . . . i hiked 6 miles and gained over 3,000 feet in elevation. in galoshes.
how hardcore is that?
it took us a while (mostly because of me and my not pacing myself enough) and i almost gave up and almost cried a few times . . . but we made it to the top! and it was worth it.
the photos are still on my camera . . . lucky you.

whales!
so. today we went whale watching (the night before we had a bonfire on brown bear feastastic beach and ithoughtiwasgonnadie and the night before i rappeled into an 80 foot hole. i may have drizzled in my pants a little) and aside from all the effing awesome stuff we saw (which i will post once i load the pics on my computer) there was this:
our naturalist (whose name was BUNNY!) was telling us about the whales and how they use their baleen plates to filter food out of the water when they eat and a mouth breather asked
"how do whales drink? "
pause.
"i mean how do they drink the salt water? or do they even need to drink since they are in the water all the time? maybe they just absorb it through their skin."
bunny begins her answer with "that's an interesting question ... "
how do whales
drink?
wow.
i mean, i get what she MIGHT have been getting at . .. maybe she was asking how come whales can live in and drink salt water and what is it about them that makes that possible that doesn't make it possible for us.
but "how do whales drink" is what she said.
it's like all the tourists that step off the tour ships here and ask "what's the elevation here?"
um. you just walked off a freakin' BOAT that is sitting in the OCEAN. you are AT sea level. then they make comments about not being able to get enough oxygen "at this elevation."
good times.

happy august!
did i mention that my birthday is next week? well, it is.
we just got back from an AWESOME week in portland! we saw good friends and family. some from halfway across the globe. attended some beautiful weddings and spent some time in the sun.
back in alaska now and THANK GOD IT HAS BEEN SUNNY THE LAST TWO DAYS. if it had been raining, i don't think we would have been able to handle it.
anyway, we've been back since saturday and i STILL haven't unpacked. so, as soon as i do that and finish loading all our pictures on to the computer . . . i'll think about blogging.
for now i'll say that our summer in alaska is slowly drawing to an end and we are super bummed to have to say goodbye and head back to exile on the EAST COAST. it's happening way too fast.
i can't wait until i can live in portland again.
that's where my heart is.
